security expert fran townsend about all of this. >>> hours leading up to a kansas city chiefs player's murder/suicide. jovan belcher was out partying with another woman the night before he shot his girlfriend, kasandra perkins. belcher and oert woman became separated. he wound up returning to her apartment complex. when he couldn't find her, he crashed at her neighbor's house and the neighbor says belcher was drunk. he returned home the next morning, several hours after perkins got back from a night out. the couple argued and belcher killed perkins, later killing himself. >> we will cherish the wonderful memories we have of jovan and pray that those memories will bring us peace as we grapple to understand the unpredictable and tragic ending of his life and the life of kasandra perkins. >> kasandra perkins released a statement saying, quote, we appreciate the outpouring of love and concern for our kasandra "kasi" perkins. our hearts are truly broken for kasi. she was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, cousin, mother and friend. please keep us in your hearts and prayers as well

city newsroom. >> reporter: jack mccullough was 17 when the 7-year-old girl disappeared and later found dead. mccullough is 73 years old and he was just convicted in her death this year. prosecutors say back in 1957 the teenage mccullough approached maria and other girl. when the other girl left, dragging maria into an alley choked her with a wire and stabbed her in the throat and chess. he dumped her body in a wooded area 100 miles away. she was found four months later. the case was unsolved for decades. mccullough's half-sister told police that her mother incriminated mccullough before her death. he was arrested tried and convicted. he claims he has an alibi at the time of maria's death. he claims he was traveling to chicago for a medical exam before joining the air force. his half-sister says he is evil and should pend spend the rest of his life behind bars. he faces a maximum life in prison. mccullough did not testify during the trial but will have a chance to speak in court. jon: he has been free for 55 years since the time occurred. >> reporter: incredible. talk about a cold case.
to it. >> reporter: you saw that woman had her little one in her arms. also in the car, we understand. the long island expressway is back open today in this area east of new york city in shirley, new york. a big rig, we now know, somehow smashed into several vehicles at first. that set off the chain reaction. sending cars across several hundred yards of the eastbound lanes. one person died, 33 others hurt. and this detail surfacing, that big rig was hauling debris from superstorm sandy. as you may know, long island communities were hit hard in october. at one point some of the vehicles in the crash caught fire. one burned beyond recognition. police looking into why the tractor-trailer that started this whole thing with the first batch of cars hit those cars. jon? jon: and there wasn't snow or fog or anything like that, just -- >> reporter: you know, i haven't read anything weather related. again, they are looking into what caused that initial crash, but so far there's nothing on the roadway to lead you to say, aha, okay, it was fog dwi. we don't know yet. jon: harris faulkner, thanks.
